The Smoke At Dawn

October 6, 2015 by Jim Peacock Leave a Comment

The Smoke At Dawn. A Novel of the Civil War. by Jeff Shaara

smoke-at-dawn-shaara

Once again, Jeff Shaara does not disappoint. This story is about the battle after Chickamauga when the Confederates pushed the Fed’s back to Chattanooga and how the next big battle there was a tipping point for the war.

I love the way Shaara tells us about history, captures the personality of each character, and brings us TO the battle field with all its boredom and its ugliness. I am constantly amazed that it is often mistakes that determine who wins in battles. Understandably, the rear view mirror is much easier than looking at the future, but clearly mistakes were made on both sides.

Bragg for the south let his ego get in the way and he spent way too much energy on dealing with his officers that didn’t like him. Even U.S. Grants favorite General Sherman didn’t know what hill he was on before attacking Braggs army which cost them many lives.

I always feel like I know the characters and feel like I am there every time I read a Shaara book. I love them.

The only question now is to decide on what’s the next Shaara book.

Repacking Your Bags: Lighten Your Load For The Good Life. Richard Leider and David Shapiro

September 2, 2015 by Jim Peacock Leave a Comment

repacking your bags

I had seen Richard Leider speak at NCDA in 2014 and was inspired by his message of passion and “unpacking your bags” to find what really matters. In Repacking Your Bags he walks you through the process. There are so many great quotes I found myself highlighting in my e-book often.

“The ideal job isn’t a standard of living it’s a state of mind and a state of being. In the ideal job, you’re applying the talents you enjoy most to an interest you’re passionate about, in an environment that fits who you are and what you value“.

The authors speak to the fact that most of us just keep collecting things physically and emotionally and we seldom get rid of them as they lose their usefulness. They offer a number of activities you can do and offer many suggestions on how to begin this process of repacking your bags. Yes, bags. There are your place, relationship, and work bags. And then they walk us through finding ‘purpose’ in our lives.

LinkedIn is your toolbox – Here are four “tool” tips to maximize LI

August 25, 2015 by Jim Peacock Leave a Comment

There are thousands of blogs, articles, webinars, workshops, and more out there about how to use LinkedIn and how to make sure your profile is 100% complete, so I’ll keep this simple.

toolbox

LinkedIn is a toolbox.

I thought about ending my blog there but for the sake of reaching 650 words, I’ll add a bit more.

Everyone has their own career development path. You are either looking for work or you will be. Even if you retire it is likely you will be looking for ideas of where to spend your time and energy.

Here are four tips on using the LinkedIn toolbox.

Four Things You Can Do To Keep Your Clients Out of Their “Panic Zone”

July 29, 2015 by Jim Peacock 3 Comments

“Get out of your comfort zone.” We’ve all heard this but some people think that there is only one zone beyond “comfort” and they call it “panic” or “freakout”.  Bryan Murphy who recently took a seminar from me explains to his students that there are actually three zones to think about.119_0073

Comfort zone, where no learning takes place. People are complacent here and often go through the motions that they are doing something.

Freakout or panic zone, again, where no learning takes place. When you freakout, you shut down, not much good is going to happen here.

But what lies in between is the key. In between comfort and panic is a zone that Bryan calls the stretch zone. This is where learning can happen. [Read more…] about Four Things You Can Do To Keep Your Clients Out of Their “Panic Zone”

The 130 mile backpacking trip I am not on.

July 14, 2015 by Jim Peacock Leave a Comment

Sunday, July 12

My calendar pops up, “depart for Sacramento / PCT hike”.

Rees, Howard, and I have been picking away at the Pacific Crest Trail (2650 miles) since 1981 when we hike 400 miles of the stretch in Washington state. Since then, we’ve done mostly 110-130 mile hikes over the years. In 2012 we hiked 200 miles where the John Muir trail combines with PCT in California.DSCN1929

I broke my ankle in March and had to cancel. [Read more…] about The 130 mile backpacking trip I am not on.

Fail Fast, Fail Often. Babineaux & Krumboltz

FailFast

Fail Fast, Fail Often. How Losing Can Help You WIN. By Ryan Babineaux, Ph.D., and John Krumboltz, Ph.D.

I saw John Krumboltz speak at Maine Career Development in June (2015) and he and a colleague of his had just come out with this book. As a believer in “all things serendipitous” and that failing is key to trying new things, I NEEDED to have this book.

In order to move forward, we need to take action.

When you take action, occasionally you fail.

Your only other choice is NOT to take action and NOT to move forward.

This is how all animals, (yes human animals), learn.
