Anxiety and Career Development: Theory, Practice, and Resources

This seminar explores the role that anxiety disorders play in the career development process of clients (including students or others being served) and offers insight into career counseling/coaching/advising approaches most effective for these situations.

We examine the differences between routine worry or stress and true anxiety disorders and how these can show up in clients’ behavior, emotional barriers, and language. Using case studies, we discuss solutions to help anxious clients move forward. Also provided are accessible resources for clients needing referral for anxiety diagnosis and treatment, as well as guidance in collaborating with mental health professionals who may be addressing the clinical aspects of anxiety concurrent with our work on the careers side.

Instructor: Michelle Tullier

Quotes from past participants:

Considering the impact anxiety plays in nearly all career transitions, this course did a great job of reviewing mental health treatment that closely aligns with career theory and strategies. Multiple people on my team provide career navigation to clients, and I am very excited to share with them the concrete takeaways I gained in this course.
– Justin Marston
The C/AAP (Career/Anxiety Alignment Protocol spreadsheet) is a wonderful reference tool and an incredible value-added feature of this course. To say it will be ‘helpful’ would be a gross understatement. Not only does it bring all aspects of the curriculum together in one place, it is immensely practical. I will use it often.
– Susan Osborne
I am so grateful to have had the opportunity to take this class as I see so many clients come with emotional issues and believe career practitioners nowadays need to align our career toolkit and theories with relevant therapeutic approaches.  Thank you to classmates’ wonderful sharings and Michelle for your great work and experience sharing!
– Mark Lam
