Repacking Your Bags: Lighten Your Load For The Good Life. Richard Leider and David Shapiro

September 2, 2015 by Jim Peacock Leave a Comment

repacking your bags

I had seen Richard Leider speak at NCDA in 2014 and was inspired by his message of passion and “unpacking your bags” to find what really matters. In Repacking Your Bags he walks you through the process. There are so many great quotes I found myself highlighting in my e-book often.

“The ideal job isn’t a standard of living it’s a state of mind and a state of being. In the ideal job, you’re applying the talents you enjoy most to an interest you’re passionate about, in an environment that fits who you are and what you value“.

The authors speak to the fact that most of us just keep collecting things physically and emotionally and we seldom get rid of them as they lose their usefulness. They offer a number of activities you can do and offer many suggestions on how to begin this process of repacking your bags. Yes, bags. There are your place, relationship, and work bags. And then they walk us through finding ‘purpose’ in our lives.

Fail Fast, Fail Often. Babineaux & Krumboltz

FailFast

Fail Fast, Fail Often. How Losing Can Help You WIN. By Ryan Babineaux, Ph.D., and John Krumboltz, Ph.D.

I saw John Krumboltz speak at Maine Career Development in June (2015) and he and a colleague of his had just come out with this book. As a believer in “all things serendipitous” and that failing is key to trying new things, I NEEDED to have this book.

In order to move forward, we need to take action.

When you take action, occasionally you fail.

Your only other choice is NOT to take action and NOT to move forward.

This is how all animals, (yes human animals), learn.

The Boys In The Boat

The Boys In The Boat: Nine Americans and Their Epic Quest for Gold at the 1936 Berlin Olympics

by Daniel James Brown

Boys in the Boat

This book kept getting recommended to me and I finally had the chance to read. This is by far, one of the best books I’ve read in a long time. I could not stop reading it. I read at night. I read it while working out on my bike. And occasionally I’d stop working and read it during the day.

It’s a true story which made it even better for me.

Here was a bunch of working class boys in Washington State, some very poor, who competed in a sport that was, and still is, more for the  affluent society. The lead boy, Joe, has a heart wrenching story which only makes you want to root for him more. Throw in that Hitler was using the Olympics to fool the world into thinking Germany was wonderful and welcoming to all, and the story just keeps getting better.

All I can say is, “Read it. You won’t regret it”.

What You’re Really Meant To Do. By Robert Steven Kaplan

What You’re Really Meant To Do. A Road Map for Reaching Your Unique Potential. By Robert Steven Kaplan

Just finished this book and really liked how the author laid out his thinking. Much of his book, the second half, is about how to keep a job and advance in a job which I really liked because most books are only about how to FIND a job.

Strengths Finder 2.0 by Tom Rath

February 10, 2015 by Jim Peacock Leave a Comment

I had read this book before but did not have a code to actually take my own assessment. This time, new book, my own personal code to take the Strengths Finder assessment, and here I am!!

Communicator / Winning Others Over- WOO / Empathy / Positivity / Adaptability

Much of my work is focusing on people’s strengths and that is clearly what Gallup has built here, a way for people to identify their strengths with specific tips on how to highlight your strengths, deal head on with others who may not understand you, and how to work with people by identifying their strengths and honoring them.

Fort Halifax: Winslow’s Historic Outpost by Daniel Tortora

February 7, 2015 by Jim Peacock Leave a Comment

fort-halifax

Having now lived in the greater Waterville / Winslow Maine area since 1984, I have driven by this blockhouse from 1754 for 30 years. I’ve climbed in it with the kids and was devastated when the April Fool’s Day flood of 1991? washed it down the Kennebec. Fortunately they found much of the blockhouse down river and put it back together with a flood stabilizing design. It is the oldest blockhouse in the U.S.

This is the first book to actually pull together the wonderful history of this fort and the importance of it to the development of the area. Settlers were not coming to this area without some protection and the Brit’s in Boston wanted more control of the area from the French in Quebec.
