INTERVIEW: TED Talks for You and Your Clients

April 27, 2020 by Jim Peacock Leave a Comment

Welcome to another Peak-Careers interview. My guests today are Joe Smith,
Principal Technical Recruiter for Thrasio and Jessica Campain,
Career Counselor for Maryland Department of Labor.

What we explore:

  • What are your favorite TED Talks for your own self improvement?
  • What are your favorite TED Talks for your clients?
TED Talks for career practitioners

I mention this Ted Talk in the interview and want to make sure people can find this talk. Kelly McGonigal’s TED Talk, “How to make stress your friend.” 14.28 minutes.  It dovetails with her book, The Upside of Stress: Why stress is good for you and how to get good at it. The book title pretty much says what’s cool about the talk.

Jessica also mentions; Time bending — 365 ways to unlock creativity and innovation | Ken Hughes | TEDx University of Nicosia

Here is my most recent blog on this topic that refers to the Renee Brown TED Talks Jessica speaks about. READ MORE

He arrived at Northeastern University in 2000 to do employer relation and work with graduating seniors.

As Joe met with recruiters he began asking, “Where are my students failing in the interview?” These conversations lead him to focus more on a job’s skills for resume development and interview preparation, than the usual student type answer of …I am a hard worker, team player, good communicator and people person. What are you skills for this job? Joe has been recruiter since 2005 and since 2007 hiring new college graduates into various roles across the United States, APAC and Europe.

TED Talks for Self Care and Perspective Change

April 13, 2020 by Jim Peacock Leave a Comment

Here are some TED Talks for self care in these difficult times. Recently I sent out a survey to my community and asked for TED Talk ideas, and more importantly, asked why they utilize TED Talks with their clients.

Thank you to the people who took the time to give your input here. Here are some nuggets from these folks on why they like TED Talks for their clients and for self care

  • Condensed and clarified messaging that helps educate them on something specific.
  • I hope they will see how changing your thinking and perspective can really give you an attitude boost.
  • I hope that they will hear a nugget of information in a different way then previously presented, so it resonates
  • Useful information about how humans operate. Invaluable insights backed by research (specific to Brene Brown’s talk)
  • The ones by Brene Brown are great for clients/students who have issues with perfectionism & difficulty letting their guard down.
TED Talks for career practitioners

Here are my 2020 TedTalks for self care and perspective change.

Most of you have the time now… check these out and please send me any other TedTalks that you discover, in particular ones you like to share with your clients to help them move forward in their career development.

Brene Brown was suggested by multiple people and was also on my list from last year. She is informative and funny and has a number of great messages.

The Power of Vulnerability

Listening to Shame

Why Your Critics Aren’t The Ones Who Count

Here are a couple that are really about challenging our perspective on ageism and one on millennial

Ageism is kind of an opiate for the masses, according to Howard Fishman (podcast: The Anxious Boomer). “We can challenge bias unless we’ are aware of it.” ~ Ashton Applewhite. Applewhite is today’s cultural face ofAgeism. Her book, The Cradle Rocks, takes us through every part of ageism and convincingly points out how pernicious ageism can be. From the workforce, inside our marriages, at the doctor’s office. It’s everywhere.

Here is Ashton’s TEDTalk on Ageism, which garnered over 1.5 million views. It’s 11 minutes, but highly watchable.

The following TED Talk goes against current thinking and attitudes about transitioning out of college and insight to millenials.

  • Why 30 is not the new 20.

Here is one from Alison Ledgerwood on improving positive thinking. This person submitting this says “I hope they will see how changing your thinking and perspective can really give you an attitude boost.“

I met JP Michel at NCDA a couple years ago and was impressed with his vision.

Students need to look beyond the job title to working on challenges – this is a “challenge mindset” that JP Michel is taking on helping teens make career decisions. His card  sort he’s created is awesome.

  • Creating confidence
  • Finding your passion / Being authentic
  • Introverts in an extroverted world
  • Conversation skills for networking
  • Perseverance in the job search
  • Fear or anxiety in the career change

Well, you can bring in experts by using TED Talks for career practitioners. I surveyed career coaches/practitioners recently and asked what their favorite TED Talks were and why. By utilizing these TED Talk outside experts, you can find another way to get your point across when you see something your client needs. One survey participant even sends TED Talks to some of her clients the night before an interview for motivation. Here are a few experts who can help you when you are working with your clients.

Hands down Amy Cuddy’s Your Body Language May Shape Who You Are is recommended to help students/clients who are feeling nervous before interviews and confidence building in general. The power poses can be very powerful before an interview and her suggestions for body positioning are important as well. Also, she refers to a study she performed regarding mock interviews and accentuates that the interviewers were impressed with eye contact, genuineness  / authentic, presence, enthusiasm.

Why Should You Consider Online Professional Development

October 8, 2018 by Jim Peacock Leave a Comment

Online professional development has become one of my “go to” ways to learn.

online professional development

I can’t believe I have been teaching online for 17 years! I began with the Facilitating Career Development (FCD) class when Cathy Van Dyke and I combined the face-to-face class with a “home built” discussion board. This kind of hybrid course was very new then. I have since added online seminars using a learning management system called Haiku LMS. Providing online professional development has become a cornerstone of my business.

When I first started teaching online very few people had experience learning online. Now nearly everyone has some experience learning online is some format. A recent survey by the Babson Survey Research Group found that one-third of college students take at least one online class. The 2017 Training Industry Report found that nearly 30% of all training in business and government is done online.  As a result, people are comfortable with the reading and writing involved in this learning format as nearly everyone is on some form of social media, uses email, and text messages.

Online professional development, elearning (all forms of electronic learning), and mlearning (learning on a mobile device) are all great ways to learn.

Bite-Sized Professional Development – TED Talks

November 13, 2017 by Jim Peacock Leave a Comment

Develop a passion for learning. If you do, you will never cease to grow.
Anthony J. D’Angelo

As career practitioners it is our responsibility to continue to learn and grow in order to serve our clients best. I was talking with a client the other day and he said, “I can’t believe how much things have changed to find jobs!”  Clearly he was frustrated that he could not just open the newspaper, find a job opening, and apply with a resume. It is my job to know the current practices in my profession. It is my job to stay “fresh.” It is my job to be inspired to do good work, so that I can provide the best services to my clients.

It is our responsibility to stay current and to challenge ourselves to learn. For people who have good size budgets for professional development, that may mean attending the National Career Development Association conferences, or taking classes or seminars. For those with little financial support for their professional development, you need to be more creative.

TED Talks are a great way to continue to learn and grow.

  • They are free
  • Often they are people you would see at national conferences
  • They are “bite-size” too, between 10-20 minutes
  • They are inspirational and often challenge us to do better
  • The diverse range of presentation styles from the speakers is always helpful to identify strategies for improving your own presentation skills

Take 15 minutes (Read my blog on “Take 15” here) each week and put in your earbuds and find a TED Talk that inspires you to be your best or gives you a different angle on a familiar topic. We can all find 15 minutes. Yeah, I know you are busy, but seriously, 15 – 20 minutes somewhere in your 40+ hour workweek. Find it. It’s there.

What about using a TED Talk for staff development? Why not take 20-30 minutes out of your staff meetings once / month to have the entire staff to watch and then discuss a TED Talk? This is where you can grow your team, get to know people better, and possibly provide better service to your students/clients as a result. Have each staff member take a turn at choosing a TED Talk.

No matter what you do…take the 15-20 minutes and keep yourself energized, learning, and growing.

Here are the results from a survey I sent out recently asking people for their favorite TED Talks.

Special thanks to all of you who took the time to fill this out.
I now have a few more “20 minute bite sized professional developments” to watch.

Angela Duckworth talking about GRIT, the power of passion and perseverance   6.12 minutes

Susan Cain, The Power of Introverts in a world that can’t stop talking. Very good talk on how introverts have an important effect on the world.   19.04 minutes

Amy Cuddy Body Language 21 minutes

Astro Teller. The unexpected benefit of celebrating failure 15.33 minutes

Kelly McGonigal’s TED Talk, “How to make stress your friend.” 14.28 minutes.  It dovetails with her book, The Upside of Stress: Why stress is good for you and how to get good at it. The book title pretty much says what’s cool about the talk.

Shimon Schoken. What a bike can teach you 15.40 minutes.  There are a lot of life lessons tied to athletics, he uses a real example, very touching, nice photos, and only 15 minutes long.

Graham Hill: Less stuff more happiness   5.43 minutes. Touches on minimalism in a short, direct way that reminds the audience that less = more, powerful message, well delivered.

Ruth Chang’s “How to Make Hard Choices.“14.38 minutes.  I love to hear/read views on career development from professions outside of career counseling, and she’s a philosopher. I love her message that some decisions are tough because there is no “right” choice. I also like watching her reason out the problem step by step.

Jia Jang’s “What I learned from 100 Days of Rejection” First, because what he did was just amazing. So simple– to go out and look for ways to be rejected so you can desensitize yourself to it. Then, I love his whole manner. He’s funny, and humble. Two of my favorite qualities in a speaker.

Meg Jay, PhD, Why 30 is not the new 20. 14.49 minutes. She had real first hand experiences dealing with a variety of issues facing 20 somethings.

Simon Sinek, although not a TED Talk, Millennials in the Workplace.  15 minutes

Jeff Bezos, founder of Amazon, Princeton Graduation speech. What Matters More Than Your Talents. 18.44 minutes. “Our character is reflected, not in the gifts we are endowed with at birth, but by the choices we make over the course of a lifetime.” I use this as a writing prompt for my students to reflect on what they want to have accomplished. The puzzle of motivation – my client base, high school juniors/seniors, keep me looking for solutions in this area. The happy secret to better work – Reminds me of the importance of setting boundaries between my work and personal life…a major challenge for me.

Mel Robbins, “How to stop screwing yourself over”.  21.39 minutes. Her message about not being complacent (our satisfaction with being “fine”) and her practical advice for a couple ways to kick-start ourselves is inspirational.

Brene Brown-–On vulnerability, which I fully endorse. 20 minutes

I’m a constant learner. You need to be a constant student because things change and you have to change and grow.
And I emphasize the word “grow.”   Zig Ziglar
