Top Industries on LinkedIn

March 4, 2019 by Jim Peacock 4 Comments

What are the Top Industries on LinkedIn?

I wanted to know what the top industries on LinkedIn were for Chapter 4 in my book, A Field Guide for Career Practitioners: Helping Top Industries on LinkedClients Create Their Next Move. (Spring 2019). Unfortunately, I could not find anything more recent than in 2016.

So in February 2019, my virtual assistant (Patte) and I used the LinkedIn search function to look up every industry on LinkedIn and record the numbers of people in that industry.

There were a few surprises as I really thought I knew what I’d find. The biggest surprises were how high the construction field (#3) and the automotive industry (#9) were on the list. I could see that some people indeed were front line people like carpenters and mechanics, but the numbers were much larger for the owners, sales staff, human resources, and I.T. That makes sense as they are building their networks to provide more services. [Read more…] about Top Industries on LinkedIn

Susan P. Joyce is in her 20th year as owner, publisher, and editor of Job-Hunt.org (don’t forget that darn hyphen), one of Forbes 100 Top Sites for Your Career, among many honors. A former military intelligence officer and MIT Sloan Visiting Scholar, Susan is focused on helping job seekers understand how the current hiring process works so they can have the shortest job search possible. A “graduate” of two corporate layoffs, Susan has seen first-hand the tragedy that can result from job loss.

Bob McIntosh, CPRW is a career trainer and coach who leads more than 15 job-search workshops at an urban career center, as well counsels job seekers on every aspect of the job search. His colleagues rely on Bob to critique their clients’ LinkedIn profiles and conduct mock interviews. In addition, Bob has gained a reputation as a LinkedIn authority in the community, where he leads workshops for non-profit and for-profit organizations. Job seekers from across the state attend Bob’s LinkedIn workshops. His greatest pleasure is helping people find rewarding careers in a competitive job market. For enjoyment, he blogs at Things Career Related  and contributes to Recruiter.com

LinkedIn: Keeping it Simple in 15 Minutes a Day

September 11, 2017 by Jim Peacock 17 Comments

So many of my clients, and even other career practitioners, often say they don’t have time for LinkedIn…or don’t know what to do. Well, there are lots of great blogs out there on what to do, but here are my thoughts on how to keep it simple in 15 minutes a day.

MONDAY

Go through your contacts and identify one person who is important to you in your 1st connections (everyone you are connected to is a 1st connection. Their connections are your 2nd connections) and reach out to one of your 1st connections via email.

*Notice I did not say to send them a LinkedIn Message. Many people do not check their LinkedIn messages so send them a real email.

If you don’t have it, (updated Sept 2019 to reflect changes)

  1. Go to their LinkedIn profile
  2. Below their name and headline you will see “Contact info” – click on that
  3. Most people should have an email here. If not, move on to another person

Sample email:

What is happening with LinkedIn?

What is happening with LinkedIn?

linkedin_logo_1

I have been on LinkedIn since December 20, 2007 — making this my 9th year. The first few years I sat back and watched a lot because I simply did not know what was happening…I needed to learn the culture, like you do when you go to a new country.

A few facts: LinkedIn was launched in 2003 and by the time I joined in 2007,LI had 17 million profiles. As of August 4, 2016 there were 450 million users. Though there are millions of people who have created profiles on LinkedIn, there are those who don’t know what to do, haven’t logged in in months, or have lost their passwords. According to Wikipedia, there are just over 100 million active users. I can believe that.

LinkedIn has changed over the years and not all for the better.  I am now seeing more spammers out there requesting to connect with me to gain access to my 945 connections. I am also seeing many more LI messages for me to buy buy buy something they want to sell, sell, sell. I’ve also seen and heard about many more users with fake profiles who are also trying to access people’s contacts to do the same thing.
