INTERVIEW: TED Talks for You and Your Clients

April 27, 2020 by Jim Peacock Leave a Comment

Welcome to another Peak-Careers interview. My guests today are Joe Smith,
Principal Technical Recruiter for Thrasio and Jessica Campain,
Career Counselor for Maryland Department of Labor.

What we explore:

  • What are your favorite TED Talks for your own self improvement?
  • What are your favorite TED Talks for your clients?
TED Talks for career practitioners

I mention this Ted Talk in the interview and want to make sure people can find this talk. Kelly McGonigal’s TED Talk, “How to make stress your friend.” 14.28 minutes.  It dovetails with her book, The Upside of Stress: Why stress is good for you and how to get good at it. The book title pretty much says what’s cool about the talk.

Jessica also mentions; Time bending — 365 ways to unlock creativity and innovation | Ken Hughes | TEDx University of Nicosia

Here is my most recent blog on this topic that refers to the Renee Brown TED Talks Jessica speaks about. READ MORE

BIO’s

Joe Smith is a Principal Technical Recruiter for Thrasio, a fast-growing  Fulfillment By Amazon (FBA)  eCommerce company headquartered in Walpole Massachusetts.

Joe started working in career services in 1998 for Salve Regina University doing employer relations. During this time he realized his passion for working with students on the transition from college senior to professional employment. He arrived at Northeastern University in 2000 to do employer relation and work with graduating seniors.

As Joe met with recruiters he began asking, “Where are my students failing in the interview?” These conversations lead him to focus more on a job’s skills for resume development and interview preparation, than the usual student type answer of …I am a hard worker, team player, good communicator and people person. What are you skills for this job? Joe has been recruiter since 2005 and since 2007 hiring new college graduates into various roles across the United States, APAC and Europe.

Jessica Campain is a veteran and a Nationally Certified Counselor. She enjoys working with youth, families and individuals focused on personal and spiritual development. Her passions include finding and sharing strategies for living the happiest and healthiest life possible. She delights in sharing shortcuts and insights with groups in an interactive and lively manner.

Jessica co-creates and facilitates the Mindfulness in the Workplace series for the Judicial College of Maryland. She is currently working with Maryland Department of Labor as a career counselor and facilitates a job seeking skills workshop called JumpStart for the Professional Outplacement Assistance Center. Concurrently, she has just started her own business, Living Intuition, where she offers experiential retreats and individual sessions for people seeking to create harmony between their outer and inner lives.

America’s Game by Michael MacCambridge

April 20, 2020 by Jim Peacock Leave a Comment

The epic story of how pro football captured a nation.

I know football is huge in America. The NFL is king both on tv, in person, and in gambling. But I never understood why it over took baseball as our nations game. Baseball was king for years and then football took over. Why?

Well, there are a bunch of “why’s”. One thing that was fascinating was the fact that college football was (and still is) fanatical and that that college football did not want a professional football league! What!? They did not want to take anything away from their market.

It’s one reason we don’t have NFL games on Friday nights and Saturday’s.

The one snippet (there are many) that really stands out for me is that early on the NFL owners and commissioner realized that if they were to be successful as a LEAGUE, then they needed to share profits to all teams in the league. By sharing tv profits and ticket sales at the games with all teams in the league, they would make the LEAGUE stronger. That is the ONLY reason there is a successful NFL team in Greenbay Wisconsin.

How many professional sports teams are in cities with only slightly over 100,000 people (2018)? One. The Green Bay Packers.

Why? Because the league shares profits.

The other way the NFL leveled the playing field was that the team at the bottom of the league had first pick in the draft (which the NFL created too) allowing teams to improve their teams and ‘level the playing field’ and create a competitive league where any team has a chance to win over time. The other sports have caught on to this one too, which we take for granted.

If you are a sports fan, and especially if you are a football fan, this is a great book to give you that historical perspective.

Retirement by Design by Ida O. Abbott, JD

April 20, 2020 by Jim Peacock Leave a Comment

A Guided Workbook for Creating a Happy and Purposeful Future.

Ida Abbott is a lawyer with a passion to help people through talent management, mentoring, and leadership development for women.

If you are a person thinking, “what the heck am I going to do when I leave my full-time job?” you should read this book.

It is one of the most thoughtful books I’ve read on this subject (I’ve read quite a few) and she has laid it out in a way that allows you to think about the wide variety of issues you must face from exploring your feelings and attitudes, values, relationships, financial considerations, legal & medical, envisioning your future, and more.

She offers these varied topics that should be considered as you rebalance your life, in a ‘design thinking’ model that encourages you to think about an issue, create options to explore, get out a try them (test them), so that you make the best decision possible.

It is a true workbook in that she gives you information, asks a number of prompts, gives you space to write your thoughts down, and come up with action plans.

This is the most comprehensive, practical guide I’ve seen regarding this “3rd age” – retirement phase – or what I like to call ‘rebalancing’ time of our lives.

Highly recommended book.

TED Talks for Self Care and Perspective Change

April 13, 2020 by Jim Peacock Leave a Comment

Here are some TED Talks for self care in these difficult times. Recently I sent out a survey to my community and asked for TED Talk ideas, and more importantly, asked why they utilize TED Talks with their clients.

Thank you to the people who took the time to give your input here. Here are some nuggets from these folks on why they like TED Talks for their clients and for self care

  • Condensed and clarified messaging that helps educate them on something specific.
  • I hope they will see how changing your thinking and perspective can really give you an attitude boost.
  • I hope that they will hear a nugget of information in a different way then previously presented, so it resonates
  • Useful information about how humans operate. Invaluable insights backed by research (specific to Brene Brown’s talk)
  • The ones by Brene Brown are great for clients/students who have issues with perfectionism & difficulty letting their guard down.
TED Talks for career practitioners

Here are my 2020 TedTalks for self care and perspective change.

Most of you have the time now… check these out and please send me any other TedTalks that you discover, in particular ones you like to share with your clients to help them move forward in their career development.

Brene Brown was suggested by multiple people and was also on my list from last year. She is informative and funny and has a number of great messages.

The Power of Vulnerability

Listening to Shame

Why Your Critics Aren’t The Ones Who Count

Here are a couple that are really about challenging our perspective on ageism and one on millennial

Ageism is kind of an opiate for the masses, according to Howard Fishman (podcast: The Anxious Boomer). “We can challenge bias unless we’ are aware of it.” ~ Ashton Applewhite. Applewhite is today’s cultural face ofAgeism. Her book, The Cradle Rocks, takes us through every part of ageism and convincingly points out how pernicious ageism can be. From the workforce, inside our marriages, at the doctor’s office. It’s everywhere.

Here is Ashton’s TEDTalk on Ageism, which garnered over 1.5 million views. It’s 11 minutes, but highly watchable.

The following TED Talk goes against current thinking and attitudes about transitioning out of college and insight to millenials.

  • Why 30 is not the new 20.

Here is one from Alison Ledgerwood on improving positive thinking. This person submitting this says “I hope they will see how changing your thinking and perspective can really give you an attitude boost.“

I met JP Michel at NCDA a couple years ago and was impressed with his vision.

Students need to look beyond the job title to working on challenges – this is a “challenge mindset” that JP Michel is taking on helping teens make career decisions. His card  sort he’s created is awesome.

Transpirations: Guidance for the Head & Heart through Career and Beyond. By Thomas Bachhuber, Ed.D

March 25, 2020 by Jim Peacock Leave a Comment

I had posted on LinkedIn about my Transitions online seminar and that Dr. Nancy Schlossberg had been helpful in providing an article for week 1 and that week 2 was all about William Bridges’ theory on transitions, and Tom Bachhuber posted some of his thoughts on LinkedIn. Next thing you know, we are sending each other additional messages and he offers to send me his book on Transpirations.

Transpirations is a combination of “transitions” and “spirits”as he says, “transitions inspired by the spirit.” Tom weaves in a spiritual side to career transitions that is very well done. It does not feel preachy at all. Only supportive of the career transition, non-judgmental and personal.

I love how each chapter was set up with a personal journal excerpt from his huge transition event of going through cancer or his failing older parents, followed by very good practical advice on career transitions, then thought-provoking questions to help you explore the topic further with space to write your thoughts down.

The book is broken into three major sections based upon William Bridges’s theory that you must begin with the end (if you were laid off, you must “end” that experience), then move to the neutral zone where it can be very confusing, and then you can actually “begin” something new.

Each section starts with what you will be experiencing in emotions, key tasks, spiritual questions, and then Ignation reflections.

I also love how he brought in other thought-leaders on transitions from Richard Bolles to Mary Oliver and some of her poetry, all for the purpose of supporting stages of the transition process and to get you thinking.

If you are looking for great career advice to help you through any type of career transition and would like to have some spiritual guidance as well to get through difficult times, this book is highly recommended.

I found great comfort in reading this book every morning to start my day.

INTERVIEW: Career Advice in a Quarantine

March 23, 2020 by Jim Peacock 4 Comments

Watch this “career advice in a quarantine” Peak-Careers Interview with our career experts.

I was not going to hold a Peak-Careers Interview this month because I had a 10-day vacation scheduled to the Florida Keys and was going to be “off the grid”. But that did not happen due to the Covid19 quarantine.

As our nation is shutting down to slow the progress of Covid19 spreading, it is important to take care of ourselves. If you are looking for work, or if your work has been cut off temporarily, you need to take care of yourself.

Listen to this interview where I ask these career coaches:

1) What advice do you have for people who are in the process of looking for work during this Covid19 quarantine?

2) What opportunities do you see?

3) What can individuals do to help themselves and others cope in these unprecedented times?
