I had the pleasure to speak with two long-time college career counselors on career trends they are facing due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Obviously, things are different, but what are they?

Dr. Katharine Brooks is the Executive Director of the Career Center at Vanderbilt University and a board certified counselor and coach. Paul Timmins, CMCS, is the Executive Director of the University of Oregon Career Center, where he collaborates with staff and faculty colleagues across campus to ensure that all Oregon Duck graduates are prepared to succeed in their chosen career fields. He has worked in higher education career centers for 25 years, and is a Past President of the National Career Development Association.
Jim Peacock is the Principal at Peak-Careers Consulting and writes a weekly email for career practitioners. Peak-Careers offers discussion-based online seminars for career practitioners focused on meeting continuing education needs for CCSP, GCDF and BCC certified professionals as well as workshops for career practitioners and individual career coaching.

It was interesting to hear the multiple ways the career centers are impacted. This whole pandemic experience will force us to change in good ways since the way we were doing things before was so entrenched. A new challenge to say the least.
I do wonder about the extroverts out there that need more than a 2d way to be with people. Does doing so much virtual become a negative for them?

Lorene, I agree, there will be some good that comes out of this…”shaking up” what we have done and creating new ways of delivering career services.
I am a HUGE extrovert and if it wasn’t for zoom / FaceTime I would be much worse off. The ability to zoom video-conference with people has been a real blessing for me. Having said that, I still feel the “zoom-fatigue” after a day on the computer.
